If I were to ask you to share your resume and portfolio, regardless of profession, would you be comfortable sending it in five minutes? Can you think of anything you need to add to the skills section or language that needs to be tweaked since first stepping into your most recent position?

In my opinion, updating my resume is the most cumbersome part of being a professional. I have difficulty shining myself up and bragging about my accomplishments. Thankfully, I am getting more comfortable talking about my talent and aspirations. More so, I am truly grateful for peers and professional services who help review and polish my resume.

A few tips I’ve learned through the many evolutions of myself are below:

  1. Save a copy of your job description. Reach out to you HR department if need be.

  2. Curate your resume for the job you're applying for. Don't forget to build out cover letter templates to make the application process easier.

  3. Keep a journal of your daily accomplishments and challenges. This helps to measure your growth and provides a repository of all, or most, of the projects worked on and the skills needed to to complete your work. Plus, when it’s time for your performance reviews, you will have a documented source of your achievements.

  4. Don’t be afraid to have a professional review your resume. There are a lot of companies who offer a complimentary review and provide feedback. Plus, most give a discount on services if you choose for a more in-depth option.

  5. Lastly, get some design help. I love to challenge myself by designing my own resume each time I am looking for a job, but if you’re not a designer it can be challenging to make your resume stand out. If you want to break out of Word-based templates please reach out to me and I will be glad to work with you.

Below are some of my past resumes. Some are pretty tragic but offered me the space to play, evolve and change to get to where I am today. Enjoy the laughs!
